Panasonic Automotive Systems confirmed Friday that a combined total of approximately 50 full-time jobs had been eliminated June 20 in two of the company’s plants in Peachtree City and Southfield, Michigan.

Panasonic North America Media Relations Director Jim Reilly said the reduction in force was a result of less demand by the major automobile manufacturers that order Panasonic radios for their vehicles.

“Factors in the economic downturn are impacting our (automotive) customers,” Reilly said.

While he could not forecast future events and economic trends that might further impact the Peachtree City facility, Reilly said Panasonic is in the business of meeting the long-term demand needs of car manufacturers.

“We live in an automotive society and Panasonic intends to continue to supply our manufacturing customers into the future,” he said. “Our function is to support those automakers. I think Americans will continue to buy vehicles.”

The Peachtree City facility currently employs approximately 1,200 people.
