Choi, Handy named National Merit ScholarsTue, 06/24/2008 - 4:35pm

Jeanie Choi and Craig D. Handy, both of Peachtree City, Ga., are two of approximately 2,800 outstanding high school seniors to have won National Merit Scholarships, financed by about 200 companies, foundations, and other business organizations. Choi, who graduated from McIntosh High School, was awarded the National Merit Georgia Institute of Technology Scholarship. Georgia Institute of Technology is a state-supported institution located near the heart of Atlanta. With a total enrollment of approximately 13,000 students, 3,500 are in graduate programs. Over 25 different degree programs are offered for undergraduates in engineering, science, architecture, and industrial management. Most of these fields also offer the graduate degree. Students come from all 50 states and over 50 foreign countries. Handy, who also graduated from McIntosh High School, was awarded a National Merit $2,500 Scholarship. This award is supported by National Merit Scholarship Corporation's own funds. Most National Merit awards are renewable for up to four years of college undergraduate study and provide annual stipends that range from $500 to $10,000 per year. Some provide a single payment between $2,500 and $5,000. Recipients can use their awards at any regionally accredited U.S. college or university of their choice.The corporate organizations funding these National Merit Scholarships represent nearly all sectors of American industry. Sponsors from the business community have underwritten awards offered in all 53 competitions, expending or committing more than $653 million to support the intellectual development of the nation’s scholastically talented youth. login to post comments |
