Meetings on zoning ordinances in any municipality run the likelihood of being sparsely attended. That was the case at the June 9 public hearing of Peachtree City Planning Commission on proposed amendments to the zoning ordinance relating to a portion of the city’s zoning districts. City Planner David Rast characterized a significant percentage of the changes as those where language had been in place for a number of years needed to be cleaned-up.

The lone citizen at the meeting was Lynda Wojcik, who had several questions and comments during the meeting. She took the podium when the topic turned to the Open Space and Conservation Ordinance.

“We need to create new zoning for open space. City hall is on open space and I don’t see a tree in this building,” Wojcik said. She noted that current provisions allow the placement of buildings within the zoning district. Wojcik proposed open space provisions for both restricted and unrestricted uses. “Take the areas already developed and make them unrestricted open space and leave the undeveloped areas restricted for actual greenspace. Once we build we’ve lost the open space.”

Her comments were well received by commissioners, with Rast adding that he would look at the suggestion to determine how to differentiate between the two designations.

Aside from the discussion on open space, the meeting contained discussion of mostly minor deletions and a few additions to other zoning districts, including various residential, commercial, industrial and agricultural districts. A review of the remainder of the zoning districts will be conducted at the June 23 commission meeting.
