Kling to retire from service

Daniel V. Kling, a resident of Peachtree City, Ga. since 1989, will retire from the United States Civil Service on July 4, 2008 after 39.4 years of service. He was born and raised in Washington, D.C., the seventh of nine children of the late Dr. and Mrs. Albert E. Kling.

Upon Honorable Discharge from the United States Air Force, Kling graduated from Livingston University with a bachelor’s degree in history and political science. While employed with the Federal Communications Commission in Washington, D.C., he was selected to serve a one year assignment as special assistant to the director of presidential personnel at The White House. In 1977, Kling transferred to the Office of the Regional Commissioner, Social Security Administration in Atlanta. From 1980-82, Kling participated in the Federal Executive Exchange Program and was chosen to serve as executive assistant to Coretta Scott King of The Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change. In concert with Lloyd Davis, SES HUD, Kling had oversight for several King Week Celebrations and the construction of the MLK Freedom Hall complex on Auburn Avenue in Atlanta.

Kling transferred to the headquarters of the U.S. Army Forces Command (FORSCOM) in 1985 and was assigned to Fort Drum, N.Y. where he performed industrial engineering work relative to the construction of the new Fort Drum which is widely considered one of the most effective and efficient deployment facilities in the U.S. Army. From 1989 to the present, Kling has served as an operations specialist in the Operations Division at the U.S. Army Forces Command headquarters. He was involved in FORSCOM’s national effort to ensure the success of the Atlanta-sponsored International Olympic Games. He is an active participant in FORSCOM’s corporate sponsorship of the American Red Cross and has donated 130 units of blood platelets used to treat cancer patients.

Kling is an active member of the National Republican Party and Holy Trinity Catholic Church. After retirement, he plans to continue his volunteer efforts at the Piedmont Fayette Community Hospital and perhaps work part-time. His federal service awards include the USAF Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Civilian Humanitarian Service Award and the Superior Civilian Service Medal.

Kling and his wife, Sharon Ousley Kling, have been married for 39 years. They have three children, Daniel John of Cumming, Ga., and Peter Arthur and Rebecca Kristen, also of Peachtree City. They have three grandchildren. Sharon Kling retired from the Fayette County School System after teaching 10th grade English at McIntosh High School for 16 years.
