The Fayette County Board of Education kicks off the retreat season this Saturday with a short trip of about two blocks to the Lafayette Education Center in Fayetteville. Although it’s a short trip, the board plans to tackle many items during the open session that runs from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

School spokesperson Melinda Berry-Dreisbach said the focus of the retreat is the system’s 2005-2006 Strategic Plans, which outlines directions and goals for the system.

“Most of the focus Saturday will be on curriculum and instruction,” she added.

In its plan, the board lays out nine strategic directions for the school year. The directions run the gamut from funding to maintaining quality personnel. Specifically, the goals are to:

• Enhance communication between Fayette County School System and its stakeholders.

• Develop instructional programs that will prepare students in the Fayette County School System to be internationally competitive and able to function successfully in the 21st century.

• Continue to provide quality facilities that enhance learning.

• Obtain the necessary funding to provide quality educational opportunities.

• Select and maintain a quality work force and provide for their employment needs.

• Provide professional development for personnel in order to update existing programs and to implement new ones.

• Provide necessary support services that will enable all students of Fayette County schools.

• Maximize their educational opportunities.

• Enable accessibility of Fayette County School System records within state of Georgia guidelines for further educational purposes or personal use.

• Apply information technology in each school and Central Office department, to improve the effectiveness and quality of instruction as well as increase the efficiency of administrative operations.

The board also plans to list its priorities for the upcoming year.
