At their Annual All-Metro High School Track & Field Awards Banquet, held at Westminster Schools, the Atlanta Track Club honored Christian Taylor, presenting him with several awards for his commanding track and field performances during the 2007/2008 school year. Taylor, a 2008 graduate of Sandy Creek High School who trains with QuickSilver Track Club, won three gold medals at the National Scholastic Indoor Championships in March and became the first male athlete to achieve this feat in 24 years. Two months later, he carried on his winning ways during the 2008 Georgia High School Association “Georgia Olympics.” At this event, Taylor set three state records in the long jump (25’6), triple jump (52’6) and 400 meter dash (46.6), breaking a 32-year record. Christian’s jumps were also a first for the state as no high school student had ever jumped beyond 25’ or 52’, respectively, in the long or triple jumps. Taylor anchored the 4X100 and 4X400 relays teams and propelled both relay teams to first place finishes. For the second consecutive year, Taylor accrued 35 points for his team, the maximum amount possible for an individual to obtain during the meet to hand Sandy Creek High School its second consecutive AAA championship. For these record-breaking field performances, the Atlanta Track Club awarded Taylor the “2008 Track Man of the Year Award for Triple Jump.” Taylor was also awarded the 39th Annual Bruce Yohe Award, given to the most outstanding Male Field Athlete and the Bruce Yohe Memorial Trophy, presented to the Most Outstanding Georgia High School Track & Field Athlete. The Awards Committee Chair, Hawthorne Wesley, declared that “Christian Taylor has put Georgia on the map!” Taylor will compete at the 49th Annual Adidas Golden West Invitational Track Meet in California on June 7. login to post comments |
