Headline only divides

I felt sadness when I read the headline announcing that Mr. Wilkerson was running for a county commission seat. Did the first two words of the headline really have to be “black” and “Republican”? Have we not progressed any further than this?

It is not that I have a problem with a black Republican running for any office; I voted for Mr. Wilkerson when he ran against Ms. Salaam in 2004 for the state House 74 seat.

But I do notice quite a difference when comparing this announcement with that of Mr. Horgan. Whose attention was this meant to capture?

To me this type of headline only serves to further divide voters when our goal should be to unite to see that the candidate who best fits the need is elected based on his or her merits.
