William R. Foster

William R. Foster, 87, Peachtree City, died May 18, 2008. He was born Dec. 17, 1920 in Camden, N. J. He was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Marie Delaney Foster. He raised his family in Eastern Pennsylvania, and retired to Georgia in 1989. Following graduation from Camden High School, he joined the United States Army Air Corps, attained the rank of Staff Sergeant during service as a tail gunner on B-24 heavy bombers. He was assigned to the 301st Squadron, 445th Bomber Group of the 8th Air Force. He was shot down flying a mission over Miersburg, Germany on Nov. 26, 1944. He was captured by German forces and became a P.O.W. until liberated by British forces in May, 1945. His military honors include the Purple Heart, Air Medal, and P.O.W. Medal. He returned to civilian live and attained a successful career in the insurance industry, retiring in 1984 from his position as a executive vice president of Marsh & McLennan companies. Memorial services will be held at a later date at St. Bartholomew's Church, Atlanta. Survivors include Jean Foster and Sarah Brooks Foster; daughters, Ann Foster Bowman, and Victoria Foster Howard; a step-daughter, Amy Commons Nally; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to the Recreation Therapy Department, VA Nursing Home Care Unit, Atlanta Veterans Medical Center, 1670 Clairmont Rd., Decatur, GA 30033. A.S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home, Decatur, was in charge.
