It was a weekend full of ups and downs for the local teams, perhaps most evident in the Fayette County and Sandy Creek boys game on Saturday night. The Tigers, ranked sixth in AAAAA and still sporting only one loss in their overall record, watched a twelve point lead early in the fourth quarter evaporate in just over four minutes. Sandy Creek took a 60-59 lead with under two minutes to play after Chris James hit two free throws but the lead would go back to the Tigers on the next possession. With 10 seconds remaining, James ties the game with a free throw but Fayette County’s Channing Welch would put a dagger in the Patriots’ hopes for an upset by hitting the game winning shot as time expired.
Welch finished with 27 points, while James added 19 for Sandy Creek. It was Fayette’s second win of the weekend. On Friday night, the Tigers defeated Union Grove 64-58. Cameron Carruthers scored 19 points for the Tigers. Starr’s Mill’s boys also went 2-0 on the weekend getting a 53-42 win over Mundy’s Mill on Friday, thanks in part to 21 points from Mark Harris, and then producing a 42-28 win over Eagle’s Landing, with Bo Tiller netting 22 points. On the girls side, Fayette County’s Lady Tigers fell to Union Grove 43-34 and lost to Sandy Creek in double overtime on Saturday 59-48, while Starr’s Mill edged out Mundy’s Mill 37-35 on Friday and fell to Eagle’s Landing 44-41 on Saturday. Katie Jacobsen scored 10 points for Starr’s Mill in the game against Mundy’s Mill, while Fayette County got 15 points from Tessah Holt and 10 points from Simone Heath in the game against Sandy Creek. Our Lady of Mercy’s boys and girls did not have an easy time with W.D. Mohammed. The Lady Bobcats were defeated by a score of 55-28, while the boys lost 83-41. On Saturday, the boys beat Mt. Zion, Carroll 64-57, while the girls lost 44-27. Whitewater’s boys and girls lost to Creekside on Friday. The Lady Wildcats lost to Creekside 49-30, while the boys fell in a close game 46-43. Grant Mannion led Whitewater in the loss with 14 points. Landmark Christian’s girls beat Southwest Atlanta Christian 44-35, thanks in part to 26 points from Christian Hunnicut. The McIntosh boys lost to Chapel Hill, the top ranked team in AAAA according to the most recent GaSports.com poll, 50-40. The Chiefs led Chapel Hill at the end of the first three quarters but were outscored 13-2 in the fourth. J.T. Piribek led Mcintosh in scoring with 12 points. login to post comments |
