The Brookwood Broncos have been one of the hottest-hitting teams in the state, and their dominance at the plate continued Thursday, when they pounded East Coweta into submission, 12-2, in six inings in Game 2 to complete a sweep of the best-of-three Class AAAAA quarterfinal series in Sharpsburg. The loss ended the season for East Coweta, which finished 15-16 overall. Brookwood won Game 1 14-3 Tuesday. Brookwood will play host to North Cobb in the semifinals Monday. The Broncos had 13 hits in their Game 1 victory. They went on to feast on East Coweta’s pitching even more in the deciding game, knocking out 15 hits. The standout of the game, though, was not one of Brookwood’s hitters; that honor perhaps would best go to starting pitcher Matt Adams, a left-hander who baffled East Coweta with mostly off-field pitches, throwing a complete-game, three-hitter. Adams got off to a rough start, giving up a line-drive, two-run home run to Felton James in the top of the first inning. It was one of the few mistakes made by Adams. Adams did not have to work without a lead for long, thanks to his catcher, Ronnie Freeman. Freeman hammered a game-tying, two-run home run over the center field fence off East Coweta starting pitcher Jarius Rhodes in the second, and Freeman did more damage in the third, lining a go-ahead RBI single in the third. Following a single to left field by Chase Hawkins, Buddy Jones scored a run with a fielder’s choice, and Grayson Flack made it 5-2 with an RBI single to left field. Brookwood scored a run each on a throwing error and a wild pitch in the fourth to increase its lead to 7-2. The Broncos’ bats remained hot the rest of the way. Jordan Erisman and Ross Heffley hit back-to-back RBI doubles in the fifth, and, in the sixth, Jon Robinson was hit by a pitch with the bases load to score a run; Seth Adkins hit an RBI single to left field; and Heffley lined an RBI single to center field, bringing the game-ending mercy rule into effect. login to post comments |
