This week Peachtree City, Ga. joins hundreds of cities, states and travel-related businesses nationwide in recognition of the 25th annual National Tourism Week. Designated by Congress and established by presidential proclamation in 1983, the event celebrates the value and scope of the nation’s $740 billion travel and tourism industry, and the economic and social contributions it brings to Peachtree City, Ga.

This year’s theme, “Discover Great American Traditions,” encourages travel to American locales and highlights the role that tourism plays in discovering the icons of a destination.

“Hotels and meeting facilities, attractions, restaurants and transportation providers are among the local businesses greatly impacted by travel to Peachtree City,” said Lauren Yawn, executive director of the Peachtree City Tourism Association. “This industry employs 7.5 million people, generates $110 billion in revenue for our Georgia and touches our community in countless other ways. In Peachtree City, this week celebrates the people who visit here, the workforce that provides service for them and the development created as a result.”

During this week-long event, the Peachtree City Tourism Association is doing a number of things to celebrate. The week kicked off with a concert performance by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy at the Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater last weekend. Also this week, a “Be our Guest” day, held May 12, recognized local hotel staff members. Residents were encouraged to stop by the Peachtree City Visitor’s Center for information and coupons on “Be a tourist in your own town” day May 13.

The staff of the Tourism Association will play the parts of the “Tacky Tourist” on Wednesday, May 14, and residents are invited to stop by the Visitor’s Center on Thursday, May 15 between 4 and 5 p.m. to cool off with samples from Rita’s Ice. Finally, the week will end with Kansas appearing on stage at The Fred on May 16 and 17.

National Tourism Week is sponsored annually by the Travel Industry Association, a Washington, D.C.-based trade association that represents the common interests and concerns of travel in America.
