Five Years Distinguished

For the fifth consecutive year in its six-year history, the Air Force Junior ROTC (AFJROTC) Unit at Sandy Creek High as been designated a Distinguished Unit.

The unit is one of 328 units to receive the award out of 879 across the nation and at selected schools in Europe, the Pacific and Puerto Rico. This award recognizes AFJROTC units that have performed above and beyond normal expectations and that have distinguished themselves through outstanding service to their school and community. These units exemplify the Air Force Junior ROTC mission of producing better citizens for America.

The award represents a total unit effort and involves setting measurable goals at the start of the school year. The cadets, under the guidance of Colonel Douglas Pearson and Chief Master Sergeant Mark Davidson, then track the goals during the year and results are reported near the end of the second semester.

“This is a tremendous honor and carries special meaning this year. The senior cadets worked very hard and deserve credit for accomplishing the work related to the goals for this year,” says Pearson. “These cadets wanted to maintain this tradition of excellence and I am extremely proud of all their efforts.”

The objectives of the Junior ROTC program are to educate and train high school cadets in citizenship and life skills; promote community service; instill responsibility, character and self-discipline through character education and to provide instruction in air and space fundamentals. Enrollment is open to all young people who are in the 9th grade or higher, physically fit and are citizens or nationals of the United States.

Any student in Fayette County not attending Sandy Creek can take the program but would have to transfer to the school and provide his or her own transportation.
