• Fayetteville native to head to flight training for duty
U.S. Coast Guard Academy First Class Cadet Joel Kurucar was one of 220 U.S. Coast Guard Academy first class cadets to learn what unit they will be assigned to after graduation at billet night on March 6. Kurucar, who will earn a commission as an ensign in the Coast Guard upon graduation, will report to flight training, in Pensacola Fla. for his first tour of duty. “It’s really exciting to be offered this great opportunity,” said Kurucar.
• Local residents become docents
Fayette residents Neal Dupre, Eleanor "Honey" Corbin and Carole Paiva toured “Camelot,” the annual Atlanta Symphony Associates Decorators' Show House, in preparation for being docents for the event. The show house is open through May 11. Camelot is a 22,000 square foot home featuring feng shui and European influences. It is located on more than two wooded acres at 3750 Tuxedo Road, Buckhead, Atlanta. Tickets may be purchased locally at Swoozies, The Avenue and Panoply in Newnan. Dupre and Corbin are members of the Intermezzo membership of the Atlanta Symphony Associates. Corbin is serving on the show house committee for the 12th year.
• Harrison receives merit scholarship
Megan Michele Harrison of Peachtree City, Ga. has received a merit-based scholarship from Salem College for the academic year 2008-09. Harrison received the Presidential Scholarship of $15,000 per year. Invited students competed for merit awards during Salem’s annual Scholarship Weekend in March, which recognizes high-school seniors or transfer students with exemplary talents and academic records. Harrison is the daughter of Karen and Thomas Harrison.
