The Sharpsburg Baptist Church will be honoring its minister, the Rev. Dr. Watson E. Mills, on his 25-year tenure with the church.

The event begins at the 11 a.m. service January 22, followed immediately by a luncheon in the Fellowship Hall.

Dr. R. Kirby Godsey, president of Mercer University in Macon, will be the luncheon speaker. He is a long—time friend and colleague of Dr. Mills.

Mills came to the church in 1981 while serving as the vice president for Research and Publications and professor of New Testament Language and Literature at Mercer University. He commuted from Macon to Sharpsburg for nearly 14 years, before moving to the area.

Among the milestones in his church tenure is the 11,200 square foot worship, education and fellowship facility built in 2000. The church has seen a growth of more than 150 members in the last three years. In 2003 it was recognized by the Georgia Baptist Convention s one of the fastest growing small Baptist churches in the state.

Mills has performed more than 200 weddings, christenings and funerals, and providing pastoral care for members in all stages of life. He has delivered more than 1,000 sermons in Sharpsburg, as well as around the worked in such places as the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, Hungary and Switzerland.

In 2004 he published “The Vocabulary of the Faith,” a collection of sermons delivered from the Sharpsburg pulpit. He has published more than 130 books and hundreds of articles in his career.
