Parade through Fayetteville to take place Monday

The Fayette County Branch of the NAACP and the Fayette County Board of Education will host the Second Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Parade on Monday. The parade is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. going south on Hwy. 85 in downtown Fayetteville. The parade route will then go west on Hwy. 54 and head to Lafayette Trail. According to representatives for the NAACP, last year’s first parade, which was held at Starr’s Mill High School, was an outstanding success with over five hundred participants. As with last year’s event, a post-parade program is planned to take place at F.A. Sams Auditorium, 205 Lafayette Ave., Fayetteville beginning at 11 a.m.

State Senator Valencia Seay, State Representative Virgil Fludd, Fayetteville City Councilman Paul C. Oddo and former Peachtree City Mayor Steve Brown will act as Honorary Grand Marshals for the parade.

The McIntosh High School Marching Band and the Mundy’s Mill Marching Tiger Band will be participating in the parade alongside marching units including Sandy Creek High School’s Air Force ROTC, and the Martin Luther King, Jr. High School Navy Jr. ROTC.

Local churches including Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Fayetteville; Holly Grove AME Church, Fayetteville; Merrill Chapel UMC, Fayetteville; Edgefield Baptist Church, Fayetteville; New Hope UMC, Fayetteville; and Flat Rock AME Church, Fayetteville as well as others will be participants in the parade also.

Reverend John Hatcher, pastor for Outreach International Center in Fayetteville, will be the program speaker at the post-parade program.

This is the only public commemoration and celebration of Dr. King’s holiday that is held in Fayette County. The NAACP is hoping this year’s parade and holiday celebration will include all members of our community who believe in and support Dr. King’s legacy and dream of a “nation where all of God’s people can live in harmony.”
