It took almost 11 minutes for McIntosh’s varsity girls soccer team to score their first goal on Monday afternoon, but the win over Thomas County Central was never in doubt. The entire first half was played in the Lady Yellow Jackets half of the field and it was obvious McIntosh would break through eventually and score a lot of goals.

And they did, defeating Thomas County Central, 8-0.

Kate Marnock netted the first two goals, one a volley that rocketed past the Thomas County Central goalkeeper and one she just slipped by on the ground. Olivia Tucker scored in the fray after a corner kick with just under 10 minutes left in the first half and Tawny Moffatt scored off of a header on a corner kick to give the Lady Chiefs a 4-0 advantage at the half.

Jess Moore nailed a goal off of a cross from Beth Austin early in the second half and then the Lady Chiefs hit a bit of a scoring lull. In fact, the Lady Yellow Jackets had several scoring opportunities that were deflected by keeper Nikki Atkinson. As some fresh legs came in to the game with under 15 minutes to play, McIntosh’s scoring started again with Emily Husted scoring two goals, one on a breakaway and one off an assist from Gabby Colonna. Brittany Schmidt scored the final goal for McIntosh with just under two minutes on the clock off an assist from Cortney Rosa.

Coach Marcia Clark was pleased with her team’s performance but still believes they have yet to put together their finest effort.

“I think you’ll see them step up even more this Saturday,” she said.

The Lady Chiefs will host the winner of Marist and Sequoyah on Saturday.
