Most of Tuesday’s matches were sweeps

The local boys and girls varsity basketball teams met on Tuesday night in region matchups and there were numerous sweeps. Starr’s Mill’s boys and girls both fell to Newnan, while Creekside’s boys and girls handed McIntosh losses, Sandy Creek swept Woodward Academy, Landmark Christian swept Our Lady of Mercy and Fayette County’s boys and girls teams both defeated Lovejoy.

Starr’s Mill hosted Newnan on Tuesday and the Lady Panthers lost 55-36, while the boys team fell just short of the Cougars losing 58-50. The boys had a 10 point lead in the second quarter but after Mark Harris was charged with a technical foul Coach Brandon Hutchins saw the momentum shift a bit. The rest of the game was back and forth with each team taking small leads on their opponents. In he end, Newnan was able to pull away and cement the win. Spencer Shelton led the Panthers with 12 points, while Harris and Kerwin Fenn each scored eight points.

Coach Whitt Jones was dispapointed with the Lady Panthers effort in the loss. Chelsey Savage, who only played i the fourth quarter, led the team in scoring with six points.

Hutchins took over the coaching position from Dave Edinger, who is on a leave of absence for medical reasons.

McIntosh’s boys and girls traveled up to Fairburn and lost to Creekside’s Lady Seminoles and Seminoles 52-37 and 69-53 respectively.

In Fayette County’s road games at Lovejoy, the Lady Tigers and Tigers both got stellar standout performances from some of thir players on their way to another region win. The girls won 47-33 and were led by freshman Tessah Holt who scored 24 points, while the boys won 68-57 and were led by Channing Welch’s 28 points.

Sandy Creek’s girls handed Woodward Academy a 52-39 loss, thanks in part to 31 points from Morganne Campbell. The Sandy Creek boys team was able to complete the sweep by defeating the War Eagles 56-47. The Patriots had three players in double digits, David Milland (10 points, nine rebounds), Chris James (10 points, five assists) and Josh Houston (11 points, six rebounds). Gavin Montogomery chipped in six points and 10 rebounds.

Landmark Christian’s girls beat Our Lady of Mercy 63-29 and got 25 points a piece from Christian and Diamond Hunnicut. The Landmark boys won 50-43. The War Eagles had opened a 20 point lead in the second quarter and led 35-20 at the half but the Bobcats charged back and cut the lead to four points with under a minute to play. Fortunately for Landmark, they were able to make their free throws at the end of the game to hang on for their second straight win.

The only teams not to get sweeps on Tuesday were Northgate or East Coweta.

Northgate’s boys and girls split with Whitewater. The Lady Vikings defeated Whitewater 64-34 and were led by Natalie Pluskota’s 18 points. Jackie Gittins was the Lady Wildcats leading scorer with 10 points. The Whitewater boys won 52-42 and got 13 points from Stephen Sargent.

East Coweta’s Lady Indians fell to Union Grove 65-38 with Shasta Ellison leading East Coweta with 14 points. The boys game was a lot closer and the Indians were able to hold off the Wolverines for a 67-61 win. Antonio Gates had 18 points in the victory for the Indians and Kendrick Hugley-Brown added 17 points.
