Bridge will span creek between Picnic Park, Drake Field

A local triathlon group has offered to pay for and install a pedestrian bridge to be installed between Drake Field and Picnic Park.

The bridge, valued at more than $30,000, would be built with a heavy-duty aluminum frame and stainless steel cabling, with a deck made of recycled plastic material. Posts will be installed at each entrance to make sure it can only be used by pedestrians, officials have said.

A $12,000 donation has been made from TriPTC Inc., the club that hosts an Olympic size triathlon in the city each year. The funds are proceeds the club received from last year’s event, officials said.

The City Council agreed last week to pay up to $7,700 for a wetlands assessment and for permits to be sought from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Architect John T. Reeves, owner of Acreage to Eden, has agreed to design, fabricate and install the bridge for the $12,000 donation from the triathlon club.

In the annual triathlon, Picnic Park is used as a staging area for bicycles, and swimmers exit Lake Peachtree to hop on their wheels and begin the cycling portion of the event.
