Two Fayette Middle students will represent Fayette County and their country as People to People Sports Ambassadors at the 2008 Youth Friendship Games in Amsterdam, Holland.

Sixth graders Jordan Coleman and Shawn Williams have been selected as sports ambassadors for the USA baseball and soccer teams, respectively. Both are in the gifted program at Fayette Middle.

As a sports ambassador, Jordan and Shawn will compete in their respective sports during the Youth Friendship Games Holland taking place July 22-27, 2008. Not only will they gain experience competing on an international level, but they will also promote world peace by working together with athletes from other countries to achieve a common goal.

The People to People Sports Ambassadors Program is an athletic, educational travel experience that cultivates personal growth and development all while providing leadership life lessons through sport.

President Dwight D. Eisenhower created the People to People Program in 1956 to enhance international understanding and friendship through educational, cultural and humanitarian activities involving the exchange of ideas and experiences directly among peoples of different countries and diverse cultures. The sports ambassador program was added in 2000 to foster the People to People mission of peace through understanding, using the camaraderie of sport to gain maturity and a greater connection to the people and cultures of the world.
