Playoff preview for five local girls soccer teams

Wednesday, Apr. 23

McIntosh Lady Chiefs (12-3-1) vs. Northside, Warner Robins Lady Eagles (9-5-1), 6 p.m.

McIntosh’s varsity girls team, the region champions from region 2-AAAA, has not lost in over a month. Since falling to Starr’s Mill 1-0 on March 10, the Lady Chiefs have won nine straight games and allowed only two goals in that span. In eight games against ranked opponents this season, McIntosh, ranked third in AAAA and 13th in all of Georgia, has a record of 4-3-1. They have posted eight shutouts this season and have outscored their opponents 69-14.

Northside, Warner Robins lost their final game of the regular season, 2-1 to Griffin. It was their third one goal loss of the season. The Lady Eagles posted three shutouts this season and have outscored their opponents 46-33 this season.

The winner of this game will meet the winner of Thomas County Central and Glynn Academy next Wednesday.

Whitewater Lady Wildcats (9-7) vs. Griffin Lady Bears (13-3), 5:30 p.m.

Whitewater’s varsity girls team lost their final four games of the regular season, but all of their opponents were in the top 15 of all teams in Georgia. The Lady Wildcats are ranked fifth in Class AAAA. Prior to their sluggish finish, Whitewater had won five games in a row, including a state final rematch with their county rivals, the Starr’s Mill Lady Panthers. Whitewater has outscored their opponents 60-26 this season.

Griffin went 3-2 over their last five games, defeating Northside, Warner Robins 2-1 in the regular season finale. The Lady Bears have not faced a ranked opponent all season, but have posted 11 shutouts this season.

The winner of this game will take on the winner of Lee County and Evans next Wednesday.

Starr’s MIll Lady Panthers (9-3-1) @ Dutchtown Lady Bulldogs (11-4-2), 5:30 p.m.

The Starr’s Mill varsity girls team didn’t plan on entering the AAAA state playoffs as the fourth seed, but a 1-0 loss to 10th ranked Woodward Academy last week sealed their fate. The loss snapped a four game winning streak in which the Lady Panthers hadn’t allowed a goal. They know they aren’t the average fourth seed. In fact, almost the entire team from last year’s state finalist squad returned this year. Starr’s Mill, currently ranked fourth in AAAA, posted nine shutouts this season and outscored their opponents 54-6. They are 2-3-1 against ranked opponents.

Dutchtown is 4-0-1 over their last five games. The Lady Bulldogs, 0-1 against ranked opponents, have 10 shutouts this season. They won the region title by defeating Upson Lee 4-0. They have scored 85 goals this season and have allowed only 21 goals this season.

The winner of this game will take on the winner of Lakeside, Augusta and Americus-Sumter next Wednesday.

Friday, Apr. 25
Sandy Creek Lady Patriots (6-8) @ Oconee County Lady Warriors (14-3-1)

The Sandy Creek varsity girls team has lost four of their last five games but are 1-1 against ranked opponents this season. Sandy Creek posted four shutouts this season. They scored 41 goals and allowed 33.

Oconee County has had two six game winning streaks this season Their last one was stopped by a 5-1 loss to Brookwood, ranked third in all of Georgia. In games against ranked opponents, Oconee County is 2-2. They have posted 13 shutouts this season, scoring 48 goals overall and allowing only 12.

The winner of this game will face the winner of Flowery Branch and Riverwood next Wednesday.

Our Lady of Mercy Lady Bobcats (10-4) @ Brookstone Lady Cougars (12-2-1), 5 p.m.

The Our Lady of Mercy varsity girls team has qualified for the state playoffs for the first time in school history. They went 6-1 to close the season with the loss coming to the seventh ranked team from Eagles Landing Christian Academy. The Lady Bobcats, with a 1-2 record against ranked opponents this season, posted seven shutouts this season.

Brookstone, ranked ninth in Class AA/A, is 2-1 against ranked opponents this season and went 4-0-1 over their last five games. In that span, Brookstone only allowed one goal. They posted 11 shutouts this season and have outscored their opponents 106-6.

The winner of this game will meet the winner of Fitzgerald and Dublin next Wednesday.
