Piedmont Newnan Hospital invites Newnan and surrounding area residents to its April Dessert and Discussion event April 29 at 6:30 p.m. in the Special Events Center located at 299 Bullsboro Drive in Newnan. The discussion, "Keep Your Joints in Motion," will be led by Donna Paul, M.D., a local rheumatologist, and will include an overview of rheumatic diseases and the latest treatment options available. Rheumatic diseases are illnesses related to joints and muscles. An estimated 46 million Americans reported being diagnosed with arthritis or some form of rheumatic conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, gout, lupus, or fibromyalgia. Arthritis is the most common cause of disability in the U.S. An estimated 67 million Americans 18 years and older are expected to be diagnosed with some type of arthritis by the year 2030. "Rheumatic diseases are chronic in nature, affecting the daily lives of people over an extended and often indefinite period of time," said Dr. Paul. "It is crucial for people who suffer from a rheumatic disease to be educated on the unique features of their particular illness and the best medication and treatment methods that are available to them." Dr. Paul is board-certified in rheumatology and is a member of the American College of Rheumatology (ACR). She earned her medical degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine and completed her internship and residency at UAB Montgomery Internal Medicine Residency Program. Following residency, Dr. Paul completed her fellowship in rheumatology in 1992 at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina. Registration for the program is free, and refreshments and door prizes will be provided. For reservations, please call 678-854-2471.
