A plot by several juveniles to rob a 16-year-old was foiled Christmas Day, and then the gunman accidentally shot himself in the ankle while they tried to speed away from the scene, police said.

“He got in the car and told the driver to ‘go, go go,’” said Lt. Belinda McCastle of the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office. After the car leapt forward, the gun went off, she said.

The robbery was foiled when several other juveniles at the victim’s home on Streamview Court came outside to intervene; it turned out that the victim didn’t have marijuana at all, which was what the suspects wanted to get, McCastle said.

The incident was reported to police after the suspect sought medical treatment, McCastle said.

The gunman was charged with criminal attempt to commit armed robbery and possession of a pistol by a person under 21 years old, both of which are felonies. The other two suspects were charged with being party to the crime of criminal attempt to commit armed robbery.
