Once it is completed, travel along I-85 it will be smooth sailing through Coweta County. But until then, traffic back-ups will sometimes be the order of the day. This weekend will be no exception, with single-lane closures through Saturday near Exit 51 at McCollum-Sharpsburg Road. Georgia Dept. of Transportation (GDOT) announced Monday that traffic on I-85 southbound would experience a single-lane closure at mileposts 49 and 50 near Exit 51 through Saturday between the hours of 7:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Northbound traffic will also see a single-lane closure on the same days between 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. between mileposts 52-55. GDOT spokesperson Kimberly Larson said extreme caution is advised when traveling through road construction work areas. “Speed limits have been reduced and will be strictly enforced. Message boards, signs, barricades, barrels and cones will be utilized to alert and channel motorists through the area. Drivers should be aware that both personnel and equipment will be operating in close proximity to travel lanes,” Larson said. Georgia DOT urges travelers to call 511 for updated information about this or any other construction project on interstates and state routes. Georgia 511 is a free phone service that provides real-time traffic and travel information statewide, such as traffic conditions, incidents, lane closures, and delays due to inclement weather. Callers also can transfer to operators to request assistance or report incidents 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
