Fayette County is tightening restrictions on any employee who wants to travel to a conference or for other business reasons.

Business Services Director Mark Pullium told the Board of Commissioners Thursday night the policy was first created in 1992 and then revised in 1996.

The revisions in the policy that Pullium recommended tighten up the policy and provide more documentation for county officials to track during the year.

Pullium explained that anybody who wants to travel on official county business will now be required to submit a detailed itinerary and food costs will be limited to $43 a day for in-state travel, and $47 a day for out-of-state travel.

The county also plans to encourage all employees to take advantage of the county’s fleet of vehicles for travel to conferences. If an employee rejects using a county vehicle and uses a personal vehicle, the employee will only receive 14 cents a mile for expenses.

“This looks like we’re trying to get employees to travel most cost-effective way possible,” said Chairman Greg Dunn.

Commissioner Linda Wells agreed and asked that a report be provided to the commissioners on a quarterly basis, so that commissioners would have a better idea of expenses when the budget time rolls around next year.

The only voice of dissent on the board was Commissioner Herb Frady, who said he didn’t have a problem with the current policy and doubted it would save money.
