Thanks to the generosity of Fayette’s business community, students in the county’s school system will receive some extra help in math and science. The Fayette County Chamber of Commerce recently held its annual banquet that featured a live and silent auction to raise funds to benefit the Fayette County Education Foundation. Chamber members raised $6,200, which was given to the foundation and earmarked for the purchase of academic programs in science and math Half of the proceeds will be used to fund two science initiatives, a partial scholarship for elementary students to attend a summer science program called “Surviving Summer with Science,” which is conducted by science teachers at Fayette County High, and the purchase of gift cards for science teachers who complete a summer training workshop. These workshops will combine learning the effective use of newly adopted materials, including technology based components, as well as visits to local businesses and industries to understand and learn more about current scientific and engineering advances. The other half of the proceeds will provide a multimedia, multi-sensory math intervention program for middle and high school students called “iSucceed Math.” The program combines technology and print, as well as incorporates the best practices of teacher-directed group instruction, interactive courseware, active practice with games, fact fluency and one-on-one tutoring to help students close the gap in conceptual understanding. Essentially, the program will help all students succeed in their study of Georgia’s new middle and high school math curriculum. “The Fayette County Education Foundation and our math and science departments are extremely grateful for the generosity and support the local business community and the Fayette County Chamber of Commerce has given to our students and teachers. Community support like this is what makes the Fayette County School System one of the best in the state,” says Melinda Berry-Dreisbach, public information specialist for Fayette County Schools and a board member of the foundation. The foundation is a cooperative effort between the Fayette County Chamber of Commerce and the Fayette County Public School System. All donations are tax deductible. Anyone interested in becoming a supporter of the Fayette County Education Foundation can contact Berry-Dreisbach at the Fayette County Board of Education, 770-460-3535. login to post comments |
