Yom Hashoah, the remembrance of the Holocaust, will be observed for the fifth time in Fayette County, at 4 p.m., Sunday afternoon, May 4.

Christ Our Shepherd Lutheran Church, at 101 Peachtree Pkwy. N. in Peachtree City, will host the event this year, alternating with Synagogue B’Nai Israel. The reason for the event is simple – and profound: To remember.

It is estimated that more than 6 million Jews died at the hands of Hitler’s thugs before and during World War II. Another 5 million non-Jews, considered unworthy of life, were also murdered.

Readings, candles, and music by members of both congregations will comprise the simple worship service beginning at 4 p.m. Afterward, a reception will take place, encouraging participants to stay and to learn to know each other better. Members of the community, regardless of their religious faith, are invited.

Susan Levine, the cantorial soloist for her congregation, has chaired a committee that is now finalizing plans for the gathering. Her counterpart at Christ Our Shepherd is David Beecher, minister of music.

The rest of the committee includes Jay Lerner, Tara Levine, Steven and Megumi Cummings, Norilynn Truscott, Sallie Satterthwaite, Dan Hoodin, Carol Jensen-Linton, Wes Saunders, Niles and Kathy Baker, and Leslie Merriman.
