Although this week was spring break, a day at the beach was the furthest thing from the McIntosh Chiefs mind on Monday evening. Hosting the Whitewater Wildcats, McIntosh was hoping for a win to improve their region record to 6-2, good enough to tie themselves with Northgate, their opponent the following day, for second place in the region.

Whitewater struck first with an RBI single from Travis Dingler, but Jake Tanis answered in the bottom of the first inning with a two-run shot to centerfield. Pitcher Cameron Rich cruised along, striking out four batters through the first four innings and benefiting by catching Heine Rivera trying to steal home in the fourth. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Eric Weiss hit a ball that Whitewater couldn’t handle, scoring two more runs and Tanis drove in another run to make the score 5-1.

Whitewater got two runs back in the top of the fifth inning with Zac Mann driving in Josh Petty and then advancing to second base on an error. Miles Head hit a sacrifice fly to cut the Chiefs lead to 5-3. The score would remain that way until the bottom of the sixth inning when Tanis struck again, this time with a two run double that scored Dwight Smith and Weiss. Tanis would score on an error and the Chiefs lead increased to 8-3.

Whitewater made the McIntosh fans a little antsy in the top of the seventh. Jake Fisher hit a solo shot with one out and the Wildcats soon had two men on with two out, but their rally came up short after a close call at first base went towards McIntosh.

The Chiefs won 8-4 behind a complete game for Rich, who had eight strikeouts on the night. It was their fourth win in a row. McIntosh is scheduled to take on Northgate this afternoon in their final game this week. Whitewater is off for the rest of spring break.

This game will be on CitizenTV sometime next week.
