10 Coweta County students have been selected to attend the 2008 Governor’s Honors Program this summer.

Coweta County secondary Education Director Barbara Louis announced the selectees, who were drawn from 40 talented Coweta County high school students nominated earlier this year.

The finalists selected to attend this summer’s program (and areas of study) are:

Thomas Broadwater (Technology), Central Educational Center

Lydia Jackson (Music and Voice), Northgate High School

Chelsea Smith (Dance), Northgate High School

Rachel Snow (Music and Voice), Northgate High School

Elizabeth Dorrell (Communicative Arts), Newnan High School

Galen Honea (Dance), Newnan High School

Mary Huff (Chemistry), Newnan High School

Margaret Malone (Communicative Arts), Newnan High School

James Schwoebel (Chemistry), Newnan High School

Jasmine Thrasher (Visual Arts), Newnan High School

All 10 finalists will attend the prestigious Governor’s Honors Program along with select high school students from across the state of Georgia.

CEC’s Thomas Broadwater – a Northgate student – is also something of a Governor’s Honors “legacy.” His father Alan Broadwater was a Lithia Springs students in the 1977 when he was selected to attend the first Governor’s Honors technology program ever offered.

The Governor’s Honors Program – held June 8 through July 19 at Valdosta state University – is a six-week summer instructional program designed to provide intellectually gifted and artistically talented high school students challenging and enriching educational opportunities not usually available during the regular school year.

The 10 finalists were among 40 Coweta County students nominated to the highly-competitive program this year. They were chosen from among all nominees statewide, following a rigorous and highly selective application and interview or audition process held throughout the winter.
