Big wins for several local basketball teams

It was a weekend full of big games for the local basketball teams, each with an impact on either the region or overall record.

On Friday night, Whitewater’s boys got a big win over Sandy Creek, 53-50. The win, which counted in region 4-AAAA, also figured big as it was the first time that the Wildcats basketball team had defeated Sandy Creek.

“Because of the type of basketball program that Sandy Creek has built, we really felt like it was a signature win for us,” said Whitewater coach Brent Jackson.

Sandy Creek opened an 18-7 lead early on and went into the half up by one. With just over a minute left, Sandy Creek had a two point lead. Jay Bright hit a three pointer and Stephen Sargent hit a layup to make the lead three points. Bright led the Wildcats in scoring with 18 points, while Zach Scurry added 17 points and 10 rebounds and Sargent added nine points and 10 rebounds. Sandy Creek’s David Milland scored 16 points and Cameron Brooks added 15.

On Saturday, the boys beat Walker 60-47, keeping the team undefeated in 2006 and pushing their win streak to three games. The Wildcats opened with a 25-4 lead and held off a strong Walker charge in the second quarter. Kevin Lewallen and Bright each had 15 points in the win.

The Whitewater girls fell to Sandy Creek, 56-24 on Friday and Walker on Saturday 47-37. Against the Lady Patriots, Whitewater fell behind early and had no answer for Lynsey Paschal (15 points), Jenna Jackson (12) or Morganne Campbell (11). . Among the players that Coach Dave Pina feels are playing well for the Lady Wildcats are Cortney Walker and Jackie Gittina. Walker is averaging 14 points per game and Gittins is averaging 10 points per game.

Also in 4-AAAA play on Friday night, the McIntosh Chiefs were able to hold on for a 42-41 win over Woodward Academy, while the Lady Chiefs lost 52-44. Coach Steve Kidd felt the team played well but lost the game at the foul line. Woodward shot 27 free throws to McIntosh’s two. Elyse Chubb led McIntosh in scoring with 18 points and seven reebounds, while Erin Justice chipped in 11 points and eight rebounds and Morgann Mitchell added seven points and six rebounds.

In 4-AAAAA action, Starr’s Mill’s boys lost to Union Grove in overtime, 66-61. Mark Harris led the team with 21 points and Bo Tiller chipped in 14 in the hard-fought game. The Panthers bounced back on Saturday to pick up a 54-50 non -region win over Sandy Creek. Harris once again led the team in scoring, this time with 28 points.

The Starr’s Mill girls completed the sweep over Sandy Creek on Saturday with a 65-58 win in two overtimes. Alexis Shaffer had 17 points and 12 rebounds, while Emily Woodward had a double-double of her own with 11 points and 10 assists. Campbell led Sandy Creek with 21 points. On Friday, the Lady Panthers fell to Union Grove 45-41. Zilles had 11 points and Emily Woodward and Kirstin Massmann each scored nine points.

Our Lady of Mercy’s boys went 1-1 over the weekend. On Friday, the Bobcats scored a 50-44 win over Mt. Paran. On Saturday, Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy proved to be too much for Mercy as the Bobcats fell 47-29.

The Lady Bobcats lost both games by close scores. On Friday they fell to Mt. Paran 32-26 and on Saturday they lost to the Lady Chargers 38-36.

Landmark Christian’s girls went 1-1 over the weekend. The Lady War Eagles lost to W. D. Mohammed on Friday 41-36 and easily defeated Mt. Zion, Carroll 64-23 on Saturday.

The Landmark boys fell to W.D. Mohammed 62-44 after leading 20-18 at the half and trailing by two heading into the final quarter. On Saturday, Landmark’s boys defeated Mt. Zion, Carroll 75-31. They had five players in double figures and held Mt. Zion to eight second half points.

Fayette County’s boys and girls only had a game on Saturday night and both teams defeated Henry County. The varsity boys fought back from deficitis in the first and second half to win 64-50. Chris Pettaway led the Tigers in scoring with 16 points, while Channing Welch had 10 points and 16 rebounds.

The Lady Tigers won 46-38 and were led in scoring by freshman Tessah Holt with 19 points. Kristene Walker added nine points.

The teams are closing in on the halfway point of their region schedules and the rest of the games will be hotly contested. The region tournaments will begin in a little less than a month and every win or loss to a region team effects a team’s seeding. The top four teams will advance to the state tournament.
