The local high school wrestling teams traveled far and wide to a variety of tournaments last weekend and they represented themselves well against some top notch competition.

Fayette County wrestled in the Valdosta Invitational and placed seventh overall with 110 points. Michael Bowra (125) and Ben Loeffler (160) placed third, while Joel Carnow (103), Alex Parsons (189) and Jonathan Beale (275) all placed fourth.

Whitewater’s varsity wrestling team competed in the Alexander Invitational and placed 13th overall. Jordan Strain (140) was their only weight class champion but Chase Penland (125) finished third.

Landmark Christian hosted St. Francis and Sandy Creek last Friday. The War Eagles defeated a depleted St. Francis team 62-6 and lost to Sandy Creek 56-24. Winners for Landmark were Chad Thames (103), David White (112), Michael Gable (119) and Tim Creamer (189).

St. Francis only had four wrestlers wrestling in the meet, so many weight classes were forfeited.

Sandy Creek coach Scott Smith is seeing improvement with his team and is pleased with a number of freshmen stepping up. Sandy Creek also hosted a JV tournament on Saturday and a number of Patriot wrestlers placed. Jesse Deyo (275) placed first, while Blair Taylor (160), Ian Duwell (145) and Julian Holmes (145) placed second, Alan Blackburn (125) placed third and Zack Smith (112) placed fourth.

McIntosh traveled to Savannah to participate in the Mark Toomey Classic. The Chiefs placed fourth overall with 189 points. Jarrod Chamblee (103) was McIntosh’s only weight class champion, but Richard Hughes (112) placed second, Matt Carroll (189) placed third and Alan Sarvis (119) and Matt Penn (145) placed fourth.

Starr’s Mill traveled to Alabama to wrestle in the Scott Rohrer Hoover Invitational over the weekend. The Panthers placed third overall and had three weight class champions: seniors Cory Radcliffe (140), Jeff Partlow (215) and Bradley Connor (275). Starr’s Mill also had seven placers in the tournament. Brandon Ferguson (130) placed second, Brandon Witta (145) placed third, Matt Hartpence (152) and Jason Allen (103) placed fourth, Joseph Hoyt (119), Kevin Thurber (125) and Chris Sudduth (160) placed fifth and Chris Green (135) and Chris Gordon (189) placed seventh.
