• Starr’s Mill’s Kelley O’Hara has been named to the U.S. Under 20 Women’s National Team CONCACAF qualifying roster. The team will play Jamaica on Jan. 19, Surinam on Jan. 21 and El Salvador on Jan. 23. All three games will take place in Cordoba, Mexico. The semi-finals and finals will take place in Veracruz. O’Hara was the leading scorer on the U.S. U-17 National Team last year. She will attend Stanford next year. • Tyrone resident Andrew Gardner, a Sandy Creek graduate and starting left tackle for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, was named to the 2005 football Writers Association of America first team Freshman All-American team. Gardner helped Tech lead the ACC in fewest sacks (10). The Yellow Jackets were third in the conference in rushing with 153.8 yards a game. • Fayetteville’s Amelia Gaillard, a sabre fencer at Ohio State University, is ranked eighth in the nation by U.S. Fencing. • Omar Jarun, a McIntosh graduate and senior soccer player at the University of Dayton, has been invited to play in the adidas MLS Player Combine in Carson, Calif. Jan. 12-15. The combine brings together MLS scouts and the most promising graduating collegiate soccer players in the nation, along with select underclass and high school prospects, for four days of rigorous trials and matches. The event takes place the week before the MLS annual SuperDraft, and gives MLS coaches and general managers a final chance to evaluate talent in preparation for their draft picks. • Peachtree City resident Jenny Norman led the East Tennessee State University women’s basketball team in rebounds (7) in their 80-59 win over the University of North Florida. login to post comments |
