Overnight rain and the threat of tornadoes may have dampened attendance last week at Tyrone’s combination Easter Egg Hunt/Dog Contest/Taste of Tyrone/St. Patrick’s Day festivities, but nothing could stop the fun experienced by the nearly 250 who made their way March 15 to Shamrock Park and Triangle Park.

The morning’s events began with the annual Easter Egg Hunt, held this year in Shamrock Park. Attended by more than 50 youngsters and their parents, the little egg-hunters made quick work of what looked like quantities of endless eggs that dotted the park’s landscape. And overlooking the treasure-filled blades of grass and the hands grasping for the colorful goodies was a life-sized Easter Bunny. A spokesperson from Easter Bunny world headquarters in Paris would neither confirm nor deny the identity of the famous rabbit, though unconfirmed reports suggested that the bubbly bunny was none other than Tyrone Police Administrative Officer Alicia Batts.

Later in the morning, the festivities continued with the annual Dog Contest. This event provided several categories of competition that challenged the creative talents of their human counterparts to somehow accentuate the bountiful attributes of some of Tyrone’s finest canine celebrities.

Food vendors set up in Triangle Park for a really delicious “Taste of Tyrone” included Spezzanos Village Market, Partners II Pizza, Chapultepec and the Mooving Cafe, a catering service.

The annual event was the first in Tyrone for Fayette Daybreak Rotary Club. The organization raised money for its ongoing charity endeavors, including Fayette Care Clinic, Promise Place, Alzheimer's Research, water projects in Ethiopia, books for children in Zimbabwe and the Tyrone Library. Also at the event was a face painter sponsored by the Goddard School in Tyrone. A Taste of Tyrone was sponsored by The Bank of North Georgia.

The events Saturday were indeed hampered by the inclement weather, but it did not curtail the fun experienced by those who made their way on the annual fun time pilgrimage to downtown Tyrone.
