Starr's Mill sweeps McIntosh, Whitewater splits with WoodwardTue, 03/11/2008 - 2:33pm

McIntosh’s boys and girls soccer teams hosted Starr’s Mill on Monday night, and the games were as good as always. Whenever these two teams meet, fans can always expect an exciting game and Monday’s matches were no exception. The play was fast and physical and everything one could hope for in an early season meeting between these two rivals. The girls played first and were deadlocked at 0-0 at the half. With just under 20 minutes to go, Starr’s Mill’s Katrina Frost scored off of a direct kick. The Lady Panthers (3-1-1) defense made the goal stand up and Starr’s Mill captured the win. The Lady Chiefs (3-3-1) got a number of good saves from keeper Nikki Atkinson. The boys game was filled with even more offense. Starr’s Mill (2-3) got on the board with just over 17 minutes remaining in the first half as Colin Mallon found the back of the net. In the second half the Panthers scored two goals in the span of 40 seconds, one from Nick Fevella and one from Jesy Phelps. The Chiefs (4-1) had a hard time penetrating Starr’s Mill’s defense and keeper Chris Ward. “We finally hit the back of the net,” said Starr’s Mill coach Mike Hanie. “Those were some great goals.” Hanie credited the win to a total team effort. Starr’s Mill’s boys and girls hosted Westlake last night after the paper went to press. The girls will host Chapel Hill on Thursday, while the boys will play at Marist tonight and at Northside, Columbus on Friday. McIntosh’s girls played at Columbus last night after the paper went to press, while the boys will host Luella tonight. Both the boys and girls will play at Whitewater on Friday. Last week, Whitewater’s boys and girls took on the other top team in Region 2-AAAA, Woodward Academy, and split. The Lady Wildcats (4-2) defeated the Lady War Eagles 2-1 after winning 6-5 in penalty kicks. Erin Emerson scored the regulation goal off a head ball with Morganne Grimes getting the assist. Penalty kicks were scored by Emerson, Bailey Powell, Brittany Vining, Holly Crawford and Jewelia Strickland. The boys lost their third game in penalty kicks this season to the War Eagles 2-1 (4-3 in penalty kicks). Kyle Adams scored the regulation goal for Whitewater, while Daniel Bowler and Vincent Easterbrook combined to give up one goal. Easterbrook had a save in the penalty kick round. Whitewater hosts McIntosh’s boys and girls this Friday and Starr’s Mill’s boys and girls the following Friday. Both games have huge implications on the region standings and could help determine who makes the playoffs and who has to travel if they do make it. Although it is early in the season, poor performances over the next two weeks will figure prominently for a number of our teams, many of which are ranked high in the Class AAAA rankings. Our Lady of Mercy’s boys and girls lost to Mt. Paran on Monday night. The girls lost 4-1 and the boys fell 2-0. The boys will host Aquinas at 1 p.m. on Saturday and the girls will host Lamar County next Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. Fayette County hosted Creekside last night and will host Northgate on Friday. Sandy Creek hosted Cartersville last night and will play at Villa Rica on Friday. login to post comments |
