Void over trash pit doesn’t affect flooring, may cost $175K to fix

Peachtree City’s police station isn’t the only city-owned building with significant repair problems on the horizon.

The City Council was briefed last week about a void that has opened up under a corner of the City Hall building near where the old police department’s holding cells were. The void is no larger than 21 inches deep and a ballpark estimate for the repair is $175,000, said City Engineer David Borkowski.

There are no cracks in the flooring or foundation as a result of the void, Borkowski said.

“We’re not seeing any stress on the building,” Borkowski said.

The solution will be to drive pilings into the earth until it reaches suitable soil to help anchor this portion of the building, Borkowski said.

Apparently this area of the site was formerly used to dispose of debris, which is why the new pilings are necessary, he added.

The project is currently unbudgeted.
