Economic slowdown crimps tax collections

Money and water — both will be topics March 3 at the Fayetteville City Council meeting.

Finance Director Lynn Robinson said the continuing economic slowdown and the impact on city revenues will have a significant impact on departmental operations for the remainder of the year.

She said a $211,700 deficit is expected, though there is no current recommendation for use of general fund reserves to offset the shortfall. Council members will consider a budget amendment to address the issues.

The council will also consider several exemptions to the Level 4 drought proposed recently by Gov. Sonny Perdue. The exemptions are for filling outdoor swimming pools, outdoor hand watering and requirements for newly installed landscape.

Director of Water Rick Eastin recommended that the council adopt the measures, to take effect April 1.

That contrasts with the Fayette County Water System, which serves Peachtree City, Tyrone, Brooks and the unincorporated parts of the county.

So far the County Commission has decided not to budge on the strict watering ban now in place. Fayetteville buys much of its water from the county.
