Baseball teams start season with high points, big winsTue, 03/04/2008 - 3:06pm

Starr’s Mill went 2-1 in the Effingham tournament over the weekend to improve to 3-1 on the season. The Panthers beat Statesboro 5-4, fell to Camden County 9-0 and defeated Effingham County 19-5. Miles Jaye drove in two runs against Statesboro, while Drew Johnson earned the win on the mound. The Panthers allowed 11 walks and only got two hits in the loss to Camden, ranked ninth in Class AAAAA, but bounced back with a much better performance against Effingham County, ranked ninth in Class AAAA. Ed Cook got the win and drove in two runs while going 3-for-4 at the plate, while Jeff Stock went 2-for-3 with five RBIs, Bryan Hasse went 2-for-4 with four runs scored and David Norman went 3-for-3 with two RBIs. The Panthers will host Sandy Creek on Friday at 7 p.m. Sandy Creek is a red-hot 4-0. After beating Whitewater 12-5 last Thursday, the Patriots shut out East Coweta 8-0 and beat Northgate for the second time this season, winning 7-2. Craig Carroll drove in Blake Brewer to start the scoring against East Coweta. Bonner drove in a run and Lane drove in two with a single. Lane and Chase Blount combined to only allow two hits and no runs. Blount drove in the first run against Northgate and the Patriots would add three more in the third inning and three more in the sixth to secure the win. Sandy Creek will host their first region game of the season today when Villa Rica comes to Tyrone at 5:30 p.m. Whitewater (2-1) bounced back from the loss to Sandy Creek with an 11-8 win over Griffin and a 10-7 win over East Coweta. Tom Bohrer was the winning pitcher against Griffin, while Miles Head led the offense, going 3-for-3 at the plate with his second home run of the season. Zac Mann and Heine Rivera each had two hits in the win. Against the Indians, the Wildcats took an early lead and surged past East Coweta after they tied the game 7-7 in the fifth inning. Rivera hit a go-ahead two-run home run against the Indians, while Kevin Fleming picked up the win on the mound for Whitewater, which outhit East Coweta 13-9. Mann had four hits, Josh Petty and Tyler Morgan had two and Head hit a double. McIntosh (1-3) lost to Blessed Trinity 17-2 on Friday and then lost to Riverwood at home on Saturday, 9-8. Jake Tanis went 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles, while Andrew Austin went 3-for-4 with one double. Ben Barter hit a three-run home run in the loss. The Chiefs picked up their first win of the season later that day, beating Newton 26-8. Tanis, once again went 3-for-4, this time with a three-run home run, while David Pauley was a perfect 3-for-3 and Brandon Hannon went 2-for-3. McIntosh was scheduled to play at Duluth last night and will play at Roswell tonight. Fayette County has started the season with two losses. The Tigers fell to Mundy’s Mill 6-1 last Friday and lost to Jonesboro 6-0 on Monday. They will host Lovejoy today at 5:30 p.m. Landmark Christian lost their season opener 3-1 to Chapel Hill. The War Eagles were scheduled to play at Woodward Academy yesterday and will host Forest Park at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. Our Lady of Mercy (1-2) defeated Meadowcreek 7-5 last Friday and fell to Hebron Christian Academy 12-2 on Saturday. In the win over Meadowcreek, the Bobcats got four RBIs from Terry Williams, who was also the winning pitcher, while Jesse Piper drove in a run and Marsalis Holloway scored two runs. The Bobcats were scheduled to face Mt. Zion, Carroll yesterday and will play at Meadowcreek tomorrow. login to post comments |
