William Gavin Noffsinger

William Gavin "Bill" Noffsinger 88, Fayetteville, died Feb. 27, 2008. He was born Feb. 13, 1920 in Muhlenberg County, Ky., where his family had lived for many generations. He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Verna Noffsinger, and a granddaughter, Katrina Noffsinger. He grew up on a 100-acre tobacco farm that had no electricity or running water until he was in high school. In 1937 he attended the University of Kentucky, majoring in political science, and was one semester before graduating when World War II began. He entered the United States Army and was sent to southern England, where he served as a second lieutenant. After the war he completed his studies at Kentucky. He worked for over 30 years in the personnel office of the Veterans Administration in Washington, D.C., retiring in 1977. He was a member of National Heights Baptist Church and enjoyed spending time with family, reading the daily newspaper, eating peach ice cream, and following Kentucky basketball. Services were at the Carl J. Mowell chapel with the Rev. Bill Scarborough officiating. Interment was at Westminster Memorial Gardens, Peachtree City. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Marilyn Noffsinger, whom he married in Sept., 1945 in Rockford, Ill.; sons, James R. and Rosa Noffsinger, Fayetteville, and John W. and Mary Noffsinger, Waynesboro, Va.; grandchildren, Mia Noffsinger, Willie Noffsinger, and Joey Noffsinger; and an older brother, Estil Noffsinger. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association. Carl J. Mowell & Son Funeral Home, Fayetteville, was in charge.
