Tommy Carney, of Peachtree City, a senior at Woodward Academy in College Park won his second state title in the 152-pound weight class of Class AAAA last Saturday.

Carney finished the season at 77-5, a new state record for wins in a single season. He finishes his high school career at 223-45 and 25 of those losses came in his freshman year. He had 51 pins on the season as well.

Carney dominated his weight class at the state tournament. He had two pins, a tech fall and two major decisions.

“In the majors I kind of held him back so we did not take any chances,” said Coach Pete Fritts. “He had a great year and finishes third nationally for wins in a season and now holds the record nationally for wins in three consecutive seasons with 196. The old record was 181.

“He is truly a fierce competitor and is able to focus solely on the one goal of capturing his second state title.”

Carney currently has a 3.7 GPA and has been accepted to the USMA in West Point where he plans to continue his wrestling career.
