City still undecided on library site

Where will Senoia’s new library be located?

That’s one of the major issues the new mayor and City Council will have to decide as the city gets back to work after the holidays.

In December, the City Council rejected a motion to place the facility in the city’s park on Seavy Street because a deal could not be worked out with the Boy Scouts who use a building at the front of the park for meetings and storage facility. The Scouts maintain they have a 99-year lease with the city to use the building, but a copy of the lease cannot be located.

City Administrator Richard Ferry said he’s meeting with an architect this week and discussing site placement for the building at all the possible sites.

Ferry said he had looked at a number of sites, including the old cotton gin buildings on Gin Street and the former Public Works building on Clark Street, along with a location in the park.

Ferry said the Gin Street site would cost too much to clean up, and the Clark Street location does not have a clear title. The city already owns the park, so there would be no land acquisition costs.

But he’s waiting for the City Council to decided on a new location. The city has $500,000 pledged from Coweta County to aid with the construction, so all that’s left is a final location to help relieve the overcrowded facility on Main Street.

“It’s going to be a great addition to the city when we get it built,” Ferry said.
