The basketball season got back in full swing on Tuesday night and several local teams started the new year with some key region wins.

Fayette County took on and swept the East Coweta basketball teams. The Lady Tigers defeated the Lady Indians 61-24 with Tessah Holt and Kristene Walker leading the way with 15 points a piece. East Coweta’s leading scorer was Kijuana Holiday with five points.

The boys game was much closer but the Tigers were able to edge the Indians in the closing minutes 59-55. Channing Welch led Fayette County with 16 points, while East Coweta was led by 14 points from Antonio Gates and 13 points from Claude Vilma.

In another region 4-AAAAA game, Lovejoy swept past Starr’s Mill. The Lady Panthers fell to Lovejoy 54-52 with Emily Woodward and Kirstin Massmann each scoring 12 points and Alexis Shaffer chipping in 10 points.

The boys game was not as close as Lovejoy defeated Starr’s Mill 69-48. Starr’s Mill’s leading scorer was Spencer Shelton who finished with 17 points.

In region 4-AAAA, Whitewater’s boys defeated the McIntosh Chiefs 49-36 with Stephen Sargent and Zach Scurry leading the way for the Wildcats with 15 and 14 points a piece respectively. The two teams were tied at th half, but the Chiefs had a hard time containing Sargent in the second half.

The Lady Chiefs beat Whitewater in overtime 36-34. Elyse Chubb led McIntosh with 15 points, five rebounds and eight blocks, while Morgann Mitchell added eight rebounds, four steals and four blocks.

“We played great defense but struggled a bit offensively,” said Coach Steve Kidd.

Sandy Creek took on Northgate on Tuesday as well and got a sweep. The Lady Patriots defeated Northgate 53-44 with Morganne Campbell leading Sandy Creek with 21 points, while the Lady Vikings were led by 11 points from both Carly Wynn and Natalie Pluskota.

The Sandy Creek boys took advantage of a slow start from Northgate and pulled out to a 26-4 lead by the end of the first quarter. Though the Vikings would play evenly with the Patriots the rest of the way, they still lost by 20 points.

“We’re just playing very inconsistently right now,” said Mack cain, boys basketball coach.

In Class A, the Landmark Christian School girls blew out Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy 58-29 with Christian Hunnicut scoring 29 of the Lady War Eagles points.

The Landmark boys did not fare as well as their female counterparts, falling to the Chargers 51-41. They got off to a slow start, being outscored 20-4 in the first half, but they scored 16 third quarter points and closed the lead to four points in the fourth quarter before Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy hit some big three pointers and put some distance between themselves and the War Eagles.
