Pilot killed; tried to land at Falcon Field

A single-engine plane based in Macon crashed in Senoia Sunday night, killing its pilot, officials said Monday morning.

The plane was reported missing after air traffic controllers lost the plane’s signal, and the wreckage was found about 1 a.m. this morning, officials said. The plane crashed in a wooded area about a mile from the new Heritage Point subdivision off Rockaway Road in Coweta County, officials said.

The pilot was identified in news accounts as George Haskell III, 65, the senior partner with the law firm Haskell & Haskell in Macon.

The plane had left Jacksonville, Fla., and was on its way to Macon but at some point Haskell decided to try and land in Peachtree City, said Kathleen Bergin of the Federal Aviation Administration. It was not clear why the diversion was made, although it could have been due to inclement weather in Macon, Bergin said.

The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash; the plane was a PA-28 single-engine Piper aircraft registered to Haskell Aircraft Enterprises of Macon.

No passengers were on board, officials said.
