Coweta voters mirror state picks

Coweta’s voters Tuesday were in line with the rest of the state when they chose former Governor Mike Huckabee and Senator Barak Obama as the nominees for their respective parties.

With 29 of 30 precincts reporting, Huckabee led the way in Coweta with 6,634 votes, followed by former Governor Mitt Romney with 5,565 votes and Senator John McCain with 5,098 votes.

On the Democratic side, Obama led the way with 5,449 votes, followed by Sen. Hillary Clinton with 3,618 votes. Former Senator John Edwards finished a distant third with 219 votes.

Just over 44 percent of Coweta’s voters went to the polls Tuesday with 17,900 voting in the Republican primary and 9,385 voting in the Democratic primary. Coweta’s increase in the number of Democratic primary also mirrors the state, which saw a huge increase in the number of residents who asked for Democrat ballots. Of the state’s record 1.9 million voters who went to the polls Tuesday, more than 1 million voted. Democratic.

“Our state’s county elections officials and the thousands of poll workers are to be commended for their management of the election process amid record voter turnout in many parts of the state. As we expected, the process ran smoothly,” said Secretary of State Karen Handel in a press release Wednesday.

This year’s presidential primary was the first statewide election to be conducted under Georgia’s requirement that voters show photo ID when voting in-person, and the fourth election overall in which photo ID has been required for in-person voting.
