Master Gardeners hold Dec. awards luncheonThu, 02/07/2008 - 3:08pm

At their annual December awards luncheon, Fayette County Master Gardeners received recognition for their volunteer service to the county for 2007 from Sonja Brannon, Agriculture & Natural Resources County Extension Agent. Among the many recipients were the Plant-A-Row Garden team leaders Don Adkins, Art Ayres, Vauna Bellury, Wayne King and Tommy Waller. The event’s special guest was Lester Bray who served as garden advisor. The Plant-A-Row For the Hungry Garden is a vegetable garden in Fayette County that is tended to throughout the year by the Master Gardeners and the produce is given to six charitable organizations in the county. Last year the two gardens produced an amazing 10,776.35 pounds, the most in the state for a food bank. In October there was a Plant-A-Row celebration party at the Hollingsworth House for all who participated in planting and harvesting the produce. The December luncheon was held at the Fayette Presbyterian Church and Lynette Peterson was chairman. The 2008 interns for the Master Gardener Program, whose classes began this month, were introduced during the luncheon. Included in the program were David Cree and Betty Chally who presented "Live Plants For Holiday Decorating.” They were followed by the skit, “The Night Before Christmas,” which featured Santa Claus played by Ed Pyron. The Master Gardeners meet monthly at the Fayette County Library community room where they hear speakers and report on projects they are involved in.
