Union City voters will go to the polls March 21 to decide on two general obligation bond issues totaling $12.575 million.

Originally on the Nov. 8 ballot but disqualified due to a technical error related to advertising the referendum, the measure to build a third fire station and purchase two engines was approved by 81 percent of voters while the roads upgrade project captured 76.3 percent of the vote.

The council had the option of holding the referendum March 21 or July 18. They opted for the March 21 date because it would be the only item on the ballot and not in competition with the gubernatorial elections. March 21 would also the earliest date for voters to state their preferences on the issue and would likely retain more knowledge about the aspects of the proposition having voted on it in November, the council concluded.

The projected cost of the March 21 referendum was put at $8,000. Holding the vote until July would cost approximately $100 since it would be held in conjunction with the state general primary election.

If successful again in the March 21 vote, $9.8 million would go for street upgrades, $2.5 million would go to the Fire Department while the balance would be allocated for bonding company administrative costs associated with servicing the 20-year bond.
