For the second time this month the McIntosh Wrestlers beat a team ranked in the Top 10. In a quad meet at Stockbridge High the Chiefs beat perennial power Stockbridge 36 to 33.

Going into final match the Chiefs were trailing Stockbridge 30 to 33 when Senior Co-Captain Richard Hughes stepped onto the mat. Hughes, wrestling at 130 lbs, was winning by a score 12 to1 late in the third period when he sealed the team victory by pinning his opponent and scoring the final 6 points for the team.

Afterwards head coach Nick Bellantoni commented, “This is a good win. Stockbridge won the 4-A State Championship last year and are one of the favorites again this year. Coach Williams puts a tough team on the mat year in and year out. So a win against them in their home gym is a big step for us.”

In their other matches the Chiefs pounded Jonesboro 76 to 6 and Salem by a score of 63 to 17. The three victories on the night improved the Chiefs dual record to 21 wins against 5 losses.

The Chiefs had six wrestlers with a perfect three wins and zero losses on the night.

They were led by five seniors, Erik Willanzheimer at 189lbs, Jarrod Chamblee 112lbs, Carl Scheumann 152lbs, Richard Hughes 130lbs and Matt Carroll 215 lbs. Joining the seniors with a perfect record was Sophomore Trent Shallow at 103lbs.

There were six wrestlers with 2 wins and 1 loss; Gabby Perez 171lbs, Jake Fountain 162lbs, Ricky Oskey 145lbs, Jessy Toscanno 140lbs, Jim Murrell 135lbs and Matt Perry at 119lbs.

Coach Bellantoni continued “This was a good night for us. A solid win against Stockbridge and two other wins. Plus we had the opportunity to pull up a few of our JV Wrestlers to get some Varsity experience. Now we need go back to the wrestling room and focus on the rest of the season. We have some tough tournaments coming up at Whitewater and East Paulding”
