The further rejuvenation of Shamrock Park in Tyrone got a boost Thursday night as the town Council unanimously approved a conceptual plan to renovate the downtown park.

Judy Jefferson, who is on the Shamrock Park Restoration Committee, explained the conceptual plan was first developed two years ago after a survey was completed by more than 800 residents.

She explained the number one priority listed by residents was beautification of the lake and said the town was on its way after adding a beautiful fountain to the lake.

Other priorities included more walking paths and lights for nighttime strolls; using the great lawn for family activities, building a children’s playground, and improving the picnic area with new grills.

“All the consultants I’ve talked to say we need to make this a destination,” she added. Some suggestions for increasing the use of the park included renting paddle boats on the lake and having a fishing competition.

She said the park also needs to be integrated with the downtown area and welcomes getting started on the project.

In related news, town manager Chris Venice explained the town was getting $30,000 a year from Fayette County for recreation. She said the money was sent to the town each quarter in $7,500 increments.
