Starr's Mill swims well in Augusta

The Starr’s Mill men’s and women’s swim teams had a strong showing at the Panther Wolfpack Invitational Swim Meet held this past Saturday in Augusta. The ladies brought home the second-place trophy while the men placed sixth out of 11 teams.

Lauren Scott (JR) and Kristen Bates (SO) were the only individual winners for the Lady Panthers. Scott won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.03 seconds and Bates won the 100-yard breastroke in 1:08.41. Scott and Bates also placed second in the 100-yard backstroke and the 100-yard freestyle, respectively.

Other ladies placing in the top ten were Katie Haycraft (JR), third in the 200 free and 11th in the 100-yard backstroke; Megan Copeland (SR), eighth in the 200 free and seventh in the 500-yard freestyle; Alex Curtis (SO), 11th in the 200 free; Kierstan Mossburg (SO), 11th in the 200-yard individual medley and eighth in the 500 free; Courtney Harris (FR), 12th in the 200 IM; Sarah Larson (SR), seventh in the 50 free and ninth in the 100 breastroke; Lauren Beatty (JR), fourth in the 100-yard butterfly; Bailey Cartwright (JR), seventh in the 100 fly and 13th in the 100 backstroke; and Hannah Wright (FR), ninth in the 100 fly.

The ladies relays also performed well. In the 200 medley relay, it was Haycraft, Bates, Beatty and Larson placing third while Cartwright, Rebecca Goodman (JR), Scott and Curtis finished eighth. In the 200 free relay it was Beatty, Larson, Cartwright and Scott placing fifth, and in the 400-free relay the team of Emily Frey (JR), Wright, Mossburg and Taylor Lego (JR) bringing home ninth place.

The men had many fast swims as well. Sophomore David Wright finished second in the 50 free with a time of 22.27 while Ryan Haycraft (SO) placed 14th with a time of 24.79 and finished 10th in the 100 backstroke. Brett Matthews (SO) finished fifth in the 100 backstroke, Eric Presley (SO) finished 14th in the 100 free and 12th in the 100 breastroke, Mark Buck took 11th in the 200 free and rounding out the individual finishes it was senior Matt Boyle placing eighth in the 100 fly.

The men’s relays also placed in the top 10. The 200 medley relay finished third. Members of that team were R. Haycraft, Matthews, Boyle and D. Wright. The 200 free relay placed fourth and included Presley Matthews, Boyle and Wright. The 400 free relay also took home fourth place with Matthews, Buck R. Haycraft and D. Wright.

The Panthers will face off against McIntosh this Saturday at the Kedron Fieldhouse and will host the Fayette County Championships Thursday, January 24 at the Lundquist Natatorium in Clayton County.
