Starr’s Mill swim teams place second at Marist

The Starr’s Mill men’s and women’s swim team placed second at a trio-meet hosted by Marist High School this past Saturday.

The Lady Panthers were lead by sophomore Kristen Bates, who won the 100 yard Breastroke, placed second in the 100 yard Freestyle and was a member of the first place 200 Medley Relay team. The other members of that relay were juniors Katie Haycraft and Lauren Scott (JR) and senior Sarah Larson. In addition, both Scott and Haycraft had other top five finishes. Haycraft finished fourth in the 200 yard Freestyle and fifth in the 100 yard Backstroke while Scott finished third in the 200 Individual Medley (IM). Junior Lauren Beatty finished fourth in the 50 yard Freestyle and the 100 yard Butterfly and senior Megan Copeland finished fifth in both the 200 IM and the 500 yard Freestyle.

The Lady Panthers also finished in the top three in the 200 Free Relay and the 400 Free Relay. Junior Bailey Cartwright along with Haycraft, Larson and Bates took second in the 200 Free Relay while juniors Rebecca Goodman and Bethany Ellyson, sophomore Alex Curtis and Scott brought home third.

For the men it was sophomores David Wright, Eric Presley and Ryan Haycraft leading the way with top five finishes. Wright finished second in the 50 Free while Presley took third in both the 50 Free and the 100 Breastroke and Haycraft placed third in the 100 Back and fourth in the 200 Freestyle. Senior Matt Boyle placed third in the 100 Fly and junior Brett Matthews finished fourth in both the 100 Free and the 100 Breastroke.

Others with a top five finish were sophomore Carl Hersom, fifth in the 200 Free and junior Jonathan Trebble-Greening, fifth in the 200 IM.

The relay team of Matthews, Presley, Boyle and Wright finished second in the 200 Medley Relay, while the team of Presley, Matthews, senior Scott Houghtaling and Wright also finished second in the 200 Free Relay.

The men’s team of freshman Mark Buck, Boyle, Haycraft, and Wright also finished second in the 400 Free Relay.

The Panthers will travel to Augusta this Saturday for the Evans County Invitational.
