It was most certainly the upset of the season when Whitewater’s boys handed Fayette County (10-7, 6-2 region) a 58-55 loss on Tuesday. It was the first region win of the season for the Wildcats. Whitewater (3-13, 1-7 region) was paced by 19 points from Jamal Washington, while Fayette County’s leading scorer, Noel Johnson, scored a game-high 23 points. Whitewater also had key contributions from Justin Smith with 13 points, Jeremy Gunter with 11 points and eight rebounds and Renaldo Jenkins with nine. "We are learning how to fight and how to persevere and how to get back up after getting knocked down," said Whitewater head coach Brent Jackson. "Last night, we just challenged the guys to forget about records and forget about everything else and play a game they could be proud of when they walked off the court. I am really proud of them and our challenge is to take that energy from last night and carry it forward." The girls game was completely different with Fayette County’s Lady Tigers (12-4, 7-1 region) dominating Whitewater (6-11, 1-7 region) 53-19. Fayette was led by 12 points from Anma Onyeuku and 11 points from Tessah Holt, while Kelsey Bowman led Whitewater with nine points. McIntosh’s boys and girls got swept by Westlake on Tuesday night. The Lady Chiefs (6-5, 3-5 region) fell to the Lady Lions 54-40 with McIntosh’s Erin Justice leading all scorers with 17 points. The McIntosh boys (6-5, 3-5 region) lost 79-58. Cameron Rich and Westlake’s Raymond Willis both scored a game-high 27 points. Starr’s Mill’s boys had lost five games in a row going into Tuesday’s game against Northgate (3-9, 2-6 region). The Panthers (4-11, 4-4 region) bounced back with a 46-43 win. Northgate’s Brannon Hopkins scored 26 points in the loss. The Lady Panthers (5-6, 2-6 region) lost to the Lady Vikings (8-6, 4-4 region) 52-37. The Northgate girls were led by 21 points from Brittany Banks, 16 points from Erica Albers and 10 points from Natalie Pluskota. Marie Jubb led Starr's Mill with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Starr’s Mill will host Fayette County on Friday. Sandy Creek’s boys (9-6, 5-0 region) stayed perfect in the region with a 62-40 win over Haralson County. Blake Brewer scored 19 points in the win and Thoedore Day added 16. The Lady Patriots (11-3, 4-1 region) also picked up another region win, defeating Haralson County 55-15. Morga Toles and Kafi Hemphill both scored 11 points for Sandy Creek. The Lady Patriot defense held Haralson County to six field goals. They did the same thing to Cass last Friday.
