The 2007 Fayette County Spelling Bee champions were crowned during the school system’s annual spelling bee on December 10 at the LaFayette Educational Center.

Dayna Gomes, an eighth grader at Fayette Middle, and Logan Austin, a seventh grader at Bennett’s Mill Middle, are this year’s top spellers. The next step in the competition is the GAE (Georgia Association of Educators) District 5 Spelling Bee at Mundy's Mill Middle on February 23. The district winner will advance to the state competition.

Objectives of the spelling bee are to help students spell quickly and accurately, promote students’ correct word usage in meaningful activities, help students correct misspelled words automatically, help students learn to compete and provide an environment to promote students’ self-esteem, character development and sportsmanship.

The Fayette County Association of Educators, GAE and the National Education Association sponsored the county spelling bee.
